Paddler Feng Is Flag Bearer
FENG Tianwei, the captain of the Singapore women’s table tennis team, will be the Republic’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony of next month’s London Olympics.
The 25-year-old led the team to a historic silver medal at the Beijing Games and will become the second paddler to earn this honour after Li Jiawei held the flag aloft in 2008.
Feng is struggling for form this year, but it was her tigerish performances in Beijing which helped to end the country’s 48-year wait for an Olympic medal.
As flag-bearer, she will lead the Singapore contingent in the march-in at the opening ceremony on July 27.
‘Tianwei earned it, because she brought (the silver medal) home for us,’ said Jessie Phua, chef de mission of Singapore’s contingent.
‘I hope this honour will help to motivate her and boost her morale.’
