Olympic medalist Xu Lijia (2008 Olympic Bronze, 2012 Olympic Gold) visited Singapore on 25 January 2013 to share her personal journey in sport to young aspiring Singaporean Olympians.

Lijia was greeted by Ng Ser Miang, IOC Vice President, at the headquarters of the Singapore National Olympic Council together with Optimist sailing world champions and aspiring Olympic sailors Kimberly Lim and Yukie Yokoyama.

Lijia reigned supreme in the Laser Radial dinghy at the 2012 London Olympic Games to win the first Olympic gold medal in a dinghy for Asia, adding to the bronze medal she won in the same class at the Beijing Games. She began sailing in the Optimist class where she won multiple Asian and World titles.

In 1990, Mr Ng, as Vice President of the International Optimist Dinghy Association started the ASEAN and Asian Optimist Championships to bring up the standard of sailing in Asia together with his Asian counterparts. As a result, Asian sailors including Singaporean sailors, have been performing consistently well at the Optimist world championships. The Optimist dinghy is currently the world’s most popular sailing boat for juniors.

Lijia also met and inspired a crowd of 400 consisting sailors, school children and parents on Saturday, 26 January, at a sailing symposium organised by the Singapore Sailing Federation.
