Atlético Madrid scores for the Singapore Olympic Foundation
Newly crowned Kings of Spain in the Copa Del Rey, Atlético Madrid, visited Singapore last week to join 130 young athletes representing the Singapore Olympic Foundation (SOF) in a charity football match in Singapore. The Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Charity Cup raised $780,000 for the SOF-Peter Lim Scholarship, a scholarship that helps promising young athletes achieve their goals in sports excellence.
The three-day tour of Atlético Madrid included activities such as football clinics conducted by the club’s footballers for aspiring footballers from primary and secondary schools across Singapore. Hola Singapore!, a cultural awareness activity, gave young Singaporeans the opportunity to learn more about the rich Spanish history and culture. A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) and the Spanish Club to provide outstanding young Singaporeans footballers and their coaches with opportunities to undergo attachment programmes with Atlético Madrid in Spain.
One of the main highlights of the tour was the football match between Atlético Madrid and Singapore Selection teams at the Jalan Besar Stadium. Played to Dr Tony Tan, President of Singapore and a sell out crowd, the hosts put up a good showing against the La Liga side despite succumbing to the Spanish club 2-0.
“I am truly heartened to see members of the public and corporate community supporting the Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Charity Cup. The Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Scholarship has benefitted more than 450 young local athletes to date. The continued support will ensure a sustained legacy to inspire more young people to play sports, adopt and live by the Olympic values. On behalf of the Singapore Olympic Foundation, I extend my appreciation to the Atlético Madrid and Singapore teams, Football Association of Singapore, organisers and partners for delivering these meaningful and fulfilling experiences in Singapore,” said Mr Ng Ser Miang, Chairman of the Singapore Olympic Foundation and IOC First Vice President.
