Singapore National Olympic Council Athletes’ Career Programme
More than 40 local athletes attended the Athletes’ Career Programme organised by the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) and the SNOC Athletes’ Commission with the support of the Singapore Sports Institute and Adecco at the Marina Bay Sands on 26 June 2013. The SNOC took the opportunity to organise this event as part of the International Olympic Committee’s International Athletes’ Forum held in Singapore from 27 to 29 June 2013. The event was graced by IOC presidential candidate Ng Ser Miang.
The Panellists included Olympians such as Barbara Kendall and Claudia Bokel. German fencer Bokel was a silver medallist in the 2004 Summer Olympics, while New Zealander windsurfer Kendall won gold in the 1992 Games in Barcelona. The athletes had the opportunity to meet potential employers who could help them secure a job in the future.
Both shared their experience of making the transition from athlete to the working world, after their sporting careers ended. Ms Bokel said: “It’s a different life than an athlete’s life but it is also something that I learnt to plan and I learn to easily survive after a while even though sometimes I still miss the competition.”
Ms Kendall said: “This is what today is all about. It’s teaching the young athletes, making the young athletes aware that there are certain things that you need to do but the learning that you have from being an athlete, understanding and learning, and knowing that it’s transferable to the corporate world.”
