Twenty-one year old Toh Liying has proved to be a consistent performer in competitive sailing. Seven years ago, when she was only 14 years old, she was an IODA Asian Championship Silver medallist in the Optimist Class.
Liying then progressed to the 420 Class with equal success winning a bronze medal at the 2001 SEA Games in Malaysia. She also represented Singapore at the ISAF Youth Worlds on three separate occasions. In 2002 she paired with Joan Huang to win a Bronze Medal at the Busan Asian Games in the Women’s 420 Class.
The past two years have seen particularly strong results as she made the transition to the Olympic 470 class. In 2005, with then-partner Tok Lee Ching, Liying sailed to a 5th place at the prestigious ISAF Grade 1 Kieler Woche and a gold medal at the Philippine SEA Games.
Liying’s performance at international youth and open regattas and her ability to work with different partners speaks well of her future placements. She has the potential to be a strong contender at the Olympic level in coming years.
