Singapore’s athletes give support to IOC’s Giving is Winning

December 19, 2007-- Some 50 of Singapore’s athletes and sports officials showed their Olympic spirit when they donated 39 boxes filled with 500 polo shirts, 200 track suits and 50 sports bags to the Giving is Winning campaign by the International Olympic Committee and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Through Giving is Winning, the IOC and UNHCR are collecting sports and casual wear from athletes to distribute to people living in refugee camps around the world. The Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) partnered with international logistics company DHL to bring the donations from Singapore to refugees in Moldova in time for Christmas. DHL expects to ship a total of 725 kg of sports wear and bags to Moldova from Singapore.
 
 
 
 

"Giving is Winning reminds the world that the Olympic Movement always has been as much a celebration of humanity as it has been about sports," said Ng Ser Miang, vice-president of the SNOC and executive board member of the IOC. For people living in refugee camps, the Giving is Winning program says they have not been forgotten.

“In this way, Singapore’s sports people can make a small but important difference in the lives of people on the other side of the world," Mr. Ng added. "We are an island country but no man is an island."

Handing over their sports gear were some of Singapore’s most well-recognized National athletes, including James Wong, Jing Junhon and Tan Paey Fern. Fresh from their triumphs at the 24th South East Asian Games in Thailand were 16 year-old twins and gymnastic champions Nicole and Tabitha Tay as well as 17 year olds Jonathan Koh and Jasmine Ser, both gold medallists in shooting at the SEA Games.

“This is such a great, meaningful program for our younger athletes,” said Lim Meng Kiaw, the high performance manager for the Singapore Shooting Association. “They learn more about sharing and how they can live up to the Olympic ideals of equal opportunities for all even when they are not competing.”
The IOC launched the first Giving is Winning campaign during the Athens Games in 2004. Some 30,000 items were collected during the Games, and the IOC is hoping for a greater result this time round. Donations in Singapore will be accepted until July 2008, just ahead of the Beijing Olympics in August.

Singapore’s National athletes are just the beginning of the local campaign. “We hope that more people will donate to the Giving is Winning campaign in the spirit of international brotherhood and the awareness that sport should be for all, regardless of circumstance, creed or race,” said Chris Chan, Secretary-General of the SNOC. In the new year, school athletes will be picking up the torch as the SNOC and DHL promote Giving is Winnning to the Ministry of Education and the local schools.
