Dr Thum Ping Tjin represented Singapore in four swim races at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.

 

Ping Tjin, or PJ as he is better known as, is also a Rhodes scholar. He retired from the national team in 2002 but continued to represent his university – Oxford – in the swim team. His brother, Bingming, also joined the national team.

 

He became the first Singaporean – and also Oxford graduate – to swim the English Channel in 2005. He is now a research associate at the University of Oxford.
