Singapore Youth Olympic Festival 2015 kicks off in style
Singapore, 25 July 2015 – The fourth edition of the Singapore Youth Olympic Festival (SYOF) 2015 kicked off this morning at the Jurong East Sports Centre.
The multi-sport youth festival for under-18 athletes was launched by Guest of Honour, Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister for Social and Family Development and President of the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC).
Close to 2,300 athletes will participate in nine sports at nine venues across Singapore over the weekends of 25, 26 July and 1 and 2 August 2015.
This year, the opening ceremony of the SYOF coincided with the Olympic Day Celebrations where the community and athletes converged at the Jurong East Sports Centre to enjoy sports and celebrate the legacy of the Youth Olympic Games.
Mr Ng Ser Miang, IOC Member and Chairman of Singapore Olympic Foundation, and Olympians the likes of C Kunalan, Mark Chay and Lim Heem Wei were present to participate in the festivities.
To officially launch the Festival, Minister Tan, Mr Ng and other guests joined young footballers from Sportif Youth, an organisation which helps at-risk youth through sports outreach efforts and initiatives, to score some goals.
“Hosting major Games like the Youth Olympic Games create lasting legacies for communities and also help seed sporting aspirations among young people. Five years ago, Martina Veloso held the Youth Olympic Flame torch in her hand and watched in awe as the world’s best youth athletes competed at the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games. Last year at the Nanjing YOG, Martina’s dream came true when she won a silver medal in shooting, we hope more young people like Martina will continue to enjoy sports and fulfil their aspirations in sports,” said Minister Tan.
