SNOC Extends 42-Year Partnership with Yonex

Singapore, 23 January 2015 – The Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) today inked an agreement with Sunrise & Company (Sunrise), extending its 42-year partnership with the Yonex distributor. The partnership will see Sunrise continue to kit Team Singapore athletes and officials heading to major Games with Yonex-branded apparel from the 2015 Southeast Asian Games to 2020 Olympic Games.

The six-year deal continues a storied partnership between the organisations that began in 1973, when Singapore hosted what was then called the Southeast Asian Peninsular Games (SEAP Games). That year, swimming coach Chan Ah Kow sought out the help of SNOC’s first president Mr E. W. Barker and then-Secretary-General Mr S. S. Dhillon to source for 450 track suits for the athletes and officials representing Singapore at the 1973 Games at home.

They found a kindred spirit in Sunrise founding chairman Mr R. L. Seth, whose only ask in exchange for his generosity was that the SNOC continue to seek him out for future sponsorship requests. Only when he is unable to fulfill the requests should the SNOC then search for alternatives.

That commitment, which has held firm for 42 years, will continue today after Sunrise’s head of group business development Mr Harinder Garga and SNOC Secretary-General Mr Chris Chan put pen to paper the partnership. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Minister for Manpower and SNOC president Tan Chuan-Jin, International Olympic Committee Member and SNOC Marketing Committee Chairman, Mr Ng Ser Miang, and Director of Sunrise, Mr Jimmy Seth, among other guests at the Singapore Sports Hub.

Under the deal, Sunrise will provide apparel for Singapore athletes and officials bound for major Games from 2015 to 2020. In addition to track suits, Sunrise will also supply Singapore athletes and officials with Yonex polo T-shirts, shorts, thermal gear, luggage gear, head wear, water bottles and outer-wear for aquatic sports.

Yonex will outfit the team representing Singapore at the 2015, 2017 and 2019 SEA Games, 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games, 2018 Youth Olympic Games, 2018 Asian Games and 2018 Commonwealth Games among other events.

Said Mr Jimmy Seth on behalf of Sunrise & Company, “It is gives us great pride for us to extend Yonex’s four decades-old partnership with the Singapore National Olympic Council. This means Team Singapore will be wearing Yonex-branded apparel at all major international Games for another six years beginning with the upcoming 2015 SEA Games at home and culminating at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.”

Said Chris Chan, SNOC Secretary-General: “The partnership between the Singapore National Olympic Council and Sunrise is one which has stood the test of time and the uncertainties of the economy over the last 42 years. In good or bad times, Sunrise and Yonex have always been there to support the SNOC and Singapore athletes and officials. I believe this partnership is the longest-standing sponsorship in Singapore, and we look forward to many more years ahead working with Sunrise and Yonex.”
