Ladies and gentlemen

Good afternoon.

It gives me great pride to be here with the contingent representing Singapore at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Firstly, I would like to extend my heartiest congratulations to all the 60 athletes from 11 sports who have qualified to make the team. I am also happy to note that there are four para-athletes who qualified for the Games. The Commonwealth Games remains as one of the rare opportunities where our athletes – both able-bodied and para – compete as one contingent.

Our team is one that includes both debutants and veterans competing in their fourth edition of the Games. Seasoned major Games athletes such as paddler Gao Ning, shooter Gai Bin and gymnast Hoe Wah Toon will compete alongside rookies such as paddler Koen Pang, shooter Emmanuel Chan and gymnast Jun Tan, who will be making their debut in the Games. The Gold Coast 2018 Games will also mark a special outing for father and son duo, shooters Poh Lip Meng and Poh Yu Hao as they compete in their first major Games together.

2018 has started out to be a significant and memorable year for Team Singapore. We competed at the Winter Olympic Games for the first time in February, and there are two more major Games – Asian Games and Youth Olympic Games – in our sporting calendar this year. I wish all the athletes preparing for these Games all the best.

I would like to express my appreciation to the students and staff at Dunman High School for hosting us today. The school has been involved in the Gold Coast 2018 School Connect programme and has also cultivated a friendship with the students and staff at Somerset College in Gold Coast.

To chef de mission Mark Chay and his assistant Lim Heem Wei and all Team Singapore athletes and officials: I wish you a successful outing at the Commonwealth Games. I hope you will all enjoy each other’s company and look after one another at the Games. Let’s all play a part in flying the Singapore flag high.

Thank you.
