Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen.
We have just concluded two major games where our athletes have delivered
spectacular and inspiring performances at the Glasgow Commonwealth
Games and Nanjing Youth Olympic Games.
This year is indeed an eventful one for Singapore sports. We opened the Singapore Sports Hub in April, hosted numerous sports events, and today, we are here to send our best wishes to athletes and officials heading to Incheon for the Asian Games and Asian Para Games.
Behind every athlete’s endeavour, there is an invisible network of supporters. Over the last few months, I have met many who have played an important role in our sports ecosystem. From the backroom support staff comprising the coaching, medical and secretariat personnel, to families and friends who have invested their time and resources to travel to venues to support the athletes, to volunteers and fans whose enthusiasm spurs the athletes to perform. Each and every one of you has contributed to building a vibrant sports culture in Singapore. It is important that we keep the momentum going to be a stronger Team Singapore when we host the 2015 SEA Games next year.
In just a few weeks’ time, 300 athletes will be representing Singapore at the
Asian Games and Asian Para Games. I would like to congratulate the athletes
who have been selected to represent Singapore at the Games. Under the
stewardships of the Chefs de Mission Mrs Jessie Phua and Mr Lukshumayeh
and their support teams, Team Singapore is in good stead for a memorable
outing in Incheon.
I wish all of you a safe and fulfilling Games. Do your best and keep flying the Singapore flag. To the families, educators, employers, sponsors, NSAs,
SNOC, SNPC, SDSC and Sport Singapore, thank you for being here for the
athletes and being part of Team Singapore.
