Ladies and gentlemen

Good morning.

This year is an extraordinary one for Team Singapore athletes. For the first time, our athletes will be represented in five major Games in a year. In February, Cheyenne Goh made history when she donned the Singapore colours at the Winter Olympic Games. Fifty-nine athletes then flew our flag high at the Commonwealth Games.

Today, we are gathered here to witness the flag presentation of the contingents representing Singapore at the Asian Games, Asian Para Games and Youth Olympic Games.

We will be sending our biggest Asiad contingent yet to Indonesia. A total of 265 athletes across 21 sports will be competing at the Asian Games, while 44 athletes from 10 sports have qualified to compete at the Asian Para Games. While our para-athletes contend with Asia’s best, 15 young athletes from eight sports will compete at the same time in Argentina with the world’s best youth athletes. My heartiest congratulations to all athletes who have earned the privilege to represent Singapore in Indonesia and Argentina.

At these Games, the Team Singapore contingents will be led by “old hands” athletes and sports administrators, all of whom have unique and extensive experience. Olympians Lee Wung Yew and Tao Li will heading the Asian Games and YOG teams respectively, and Mr Ali Daud will be leading the Asian Para Games team.

Team Singapore, do us proud at the Asian Games and YOG. Be the best ambassadors you can be for Singapore. Enjoy the competition and camaraderie the Games have to offer.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the supporters and people behind the scenes for being there for our athletes in their Games journey. We say this often, only because it’s true: our athletes would not be able to do what they do without your backing, so thank you very much.

Lastly, I wish everyone here a pleasant day at car-free Sunday, where there are plenty of activities in store for you.
