Ladies and gentlemen
Good evening and welcome to the 2016 Singapore Sports Awards Presentation.
Thank you for being here this evening to celebrate Team Singapore’s achievements in 2015. Last year was indeed a celebratory one for sports in Singapore. It was especially memorable for me as I was involved with the 28th SEA Games contingent as the Chef de Mission, sharing the responsibility with fellow Chef de Mission, Mr Nicholas Fang.
Team Singapore broke historic records on all fronts – we had the biggest medal haul ever of 259 medals, surpassing top ranked nation Thailand’s 247 medals. We broke 25 Games and 29 National Records, and celebrated 74 Personal Best performances.
Later this evening, we have another record to celebrate. We will be recognising 232 Meritorious Awards recipients – the most we have ever honoured at any Sports Awards.
We will also be recognising athletes, teams, coaches, event organisers and sponsors, as well as journalists in the 11 main awards categories. Like previous years, the Selection Committees from the Singapore National Olympic Council and Sport Singapore met and deliberated on the nominations, then voted for the winners through secret ballots. As of now, no one knows the results except auditing firm KPMG who tallied the votes.
I would like to extend my heartiest congratulations to all finalists and recipients today. You have all played a part in achieving excellence and setting the bar high for the future generations to emulate.
I would like to express my gratitude to the Tote Board family, comprising Tote Board, Singapore Pools and Singapore Turf Club; Singapore Airlines; the National Sports Associations; and especially the teams from the Singapore National Olympic Council and Sport Singapore for making this evening’s celebration a special one.
Last but not least, I would like to thank the members of the Organising Committee for their hard work.
And now ladies and gentlemen, please join me in welcoming our Guest of Honour, Mr Tan Chuan-Jin on stage to deliver his speech.
