Athletes and parents
Ladies and gentlemen
I would first like to extend my heartiest congratulations to all recipients of the Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Scholarship. This year, we received a total of 1,202 scholarship applications for all four categories. 308 athletes have qualified to receive their scholarships, these athletes include 38 primary, 99 secondary, 126 tertiary students and 45 in the under-18 high performance category. Congratulations!
This year, we celebrate the sixth edition of the Scholarship. It all began in 2010 when Mr Peter Lim donated a sum of money to the Singapore Olympic Foundation to set up a sports scholarship for young deserving athletes. So far, 1,758 scholarships have been awarded to help young athletes to pursue their sporting goals. Let’s give a round of applause to our Guest of Honour, Mr Peter Lim for his generosity.
Today, we are also lucky to have among us special guests who have accomplished success in their own sport. Ms Logan Tom started playing volleyball when she was 13 years old and never looked back. A four-time Olympian and double Olympic medallist who represented the United States, she graduated from Stanford University majoring in International Affairs. She is now a professional volleyball player and will share more of her story with you.
Among us today are nine representatives from Valencia Football Club and the Spanish football league, LaLiga. Footballers Santi Mina, Mathew Ryan, Jaume Domenech, Javi Fuego and Paco Alcácer, Head Coach Pako Ayestaran as well as Valencia Football legends and LaLiga ambassadors Gaizka Mendieta and David Albelda will also spend some time with you later.
I am also very pleased to learn that seven of our past recipients have qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. They are: Joseph Schooling, Quah Zheng Wen, Jasmine Ser, Colin Cheng, Saiyidah Aisyah, Derek Wong and Liang Xiaoyu. Do support their endeavours as they fly the Singapore flag high in Rio this August.
I would like to thank the Ministry of Education and Sport Singapore for their help and guidance in the selection of the recipients.
The main objective of the Scholarship has always been to support young athletes. We are here to help them to achieve their sporting goals regardless of their financial backgrounds. We hope to be able to continue to do this and to support many generations of athletes to come.
Enjoy the afternoon and all the best in your endeavours. I am pleased to hand the stage over to Pako to say a few words. Thank you.
