For the women's table tennis team comprising Li Jiawei, Wang Yuegu,
Sun Beibei, Tan Paey Fern and Yu Mengyu, September 2007 was memorable
month. Competing in the prestigious 18th Asian Table Tennis
Campionships, they finsihed a credible second behind powerhouse China.
Significantly, they overcame Japan to reach the final.
There were other highlights for the girls that showed consistent
form. For instance, they beat Malaysia in the final of the Commonwealth
Championships in India. They also demonstrated their prowess with a 3-0
whitewash of Thailand in the SEA Games women's team final, contributing
to our clean sweep of all seven table tennis gold medals.
Apart from these achievements, the team made their mark in terms of
world rankings. Building on their 2007 performances, they, as a team,
are only behind powerhouse China, with several players moving up to be
among the world's Top 10.
This year, the buzz is that they may well end Singapore's long wait
for an Olympic Medal since 1960. As the girls work hard and get ready to
cope with the pressure of this big challenge, it sure feels good to earn
recognition as Singapore's Team of the Year (Event). |
